Rwanda and Uganda share the same Virunga mountain range and the same mountain gorillas — but the experience of trekking them is genuinely different. Here's how to choose. LOGISTICS Rwanda is compact. Kigali International Airport is a 2.5-hour drive from Volcanoes National Park, so you can trek on day two and be back in the capital the same afternoon. Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a longer transfer from Entebbe — a full-day drive or a domestic flight to Kihihi. Multi-day Uganda itineraries are the norm. THE TREK ITSELF Bwindi's forest is denser, the slopes steeper, and the vegetation thicker — treks average longer and are physically harder. Rwanda's bamboo slopes, while still steep, tend to produce slightly shorter hikes and better under-canopy visibility for photography.
