Akagera National Park is Rwanda's only savanna park, home to the big five and a remarkable conservation success story.

In Depth

Akagera National Park covers 1,122 sq km along Rwanda's eastern border with Tanzania. Named after the Kagera River, the park encompasses diverse habitats from open savanna to wetlands and lakes. After nearly being lost to poaching and habitat loss, Akagera has been dramatically restored through a partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks, now hosting lions, rhinos, elephants, leopards, and buffalo.
