Overview

Volcanoes National Park protects the Rwandan section of the Virunga Mountains, a chain of volcanic volcanoes shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is best known as a sanctuary for the endangered mountain gorilla.

Volcanoes National Park spans 160 sq km of the Virunga Mountains, protecting five extinct volcanoes and half the world's remaining mountain gorillas. The park was the base for Dian Fossey's groundbreaking gorilla research, immortalized in "Gorillas in the Mist." Today, visitors can track gorilla families through bamboo forests and alpine meadows, encountering these remarkable primates in their natural habitat.
